Observer on the test The DSA launched a campaign in year 2010 to encourage more leaner drivers to take an observer with them on their practical car driving test. Before year 2010 the leaner driver will need to ask the examiner if it’s ok for their driving instructor to accompany. Although this is something that had always been encouraged, DSA decided to take a much more proactive approach in promoting observers on the car practical driving test. This involves an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), parent or friend sitting in on the practical car driving test to observe the leaner driver and listen to the examiner’s feedback – all with a view to providing critical support for the learner and newly qualified driver’s ongoing development and lifelong learning. If you decide that you do not want to be accompanied you will, at the end of their test, be given the opportunity to have your accompanying driver present for debrief at the conclusion of the test. “If the candidate fails the driving test, the instructor has a better understanding of their student short fall” I try to sit in every car practical driving test since the beginning, including the first student I thought to drive in East Ham. I have sat in over 500 practical car driving test witnessing the drive and hear the examiner’s feedback first hand. This means I can discuss it with my student afterwards and work on particular areas of weakness in future lessons. See my testimonials.
